Frequently Asked Questions

Australian residents are taxed at progressive rates for 2024-2025:

  • $0 to $18,200: No tax (tax-free threshold)
  • $18,201 to $45,000: 16c for each $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 to $135,000: $4,288 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 to $190,000: $31,288 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
  • $190,001 and over: $51,638 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

These rates do not include the Medicare Levy of 2%.

The Australian Government has announced tax cuts that will come into effect from July 1, 2026:

  • $0 to $18,200: No tax (tax-free threshold remains unchanged)
  • $18,201 to $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200 (reduced from 16c)
  • $45,001 to $135,000: $4,288 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 to $190,000: $31,288 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
  • $190,001 and over: $51,638 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

From July 1, 2027, the rate for the $18,201 to $45,000 bracket will be reduced further to 14c per dollar.

These changes will provide tax relief for low and middle-income earners, with the tax-free threshold remaining at $18,200. The Medicare Levy of 2% will still apply.

Medicare Levy:

  • Most Australian residents pay a 2% Medicare Levy on their taxable income
  • Low-income earners may get a reduction or exemption

Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS):

  • Additional levy for high income earners without private hospital cover
  • Income thresholds and rates for 2024-25:

Singles:

  • $93,000 or less: No surcharge
  • $93,001 to $108,000: 1.0% surcharge
  • $108,001 to $135,000: 1.25% surcharge
  • $135,001 or more: 1.5% surcharge

Families:

  • $186,000 or less: No surcharge
  • $186,001 to $216,000: 1.0% surcharge
  • $216,001 to $270,000: 1.25% surcharge
  • $270,001 or more: 1.5% surcharge

Avoiding the Surcharge:

  • Hold eligible private hospital cover
  • Policy must have a maximum excess of $750 for singles or $1,500 for families/couples
  • Cover must be with a registered Australian health fund
  • Extras-only cover does not exempt you from the surcharge

Working Holiday Makers (WHM) are taxed at special rates for 2024-2025:

  • 15% on income up to $45,000
  • 30% on income $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income over $190,000

WHM visa holders must also pay the Medicare Levy of 2%.

Non-residents are taxed at different rates for 2024-2025:

  • 30% on income up to $135,000
  • 37% on income $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income over $190,000

Non-residents do not pay the Medicare Levy and cannot claim the tax-free threshold.

The Superannuation Guarantee (SG) rate for 2024-2025 is 11.5% of your ordinary time earnings. This rate will increase to:

  • 12% from July 1, 2025

Employers must pay super for eligible employees earning $450 or more per month (before tax).

HECS-HELP repayments start when your income reaches $54,435 (2024-2025). The repayment rate increases with your income:

  • Below $54,435: Nil
  • $54,435 to $62,850: 1.0%
  • $62,851 to $66,620: 2.0%
  • $66,621 to $70,618: 2.5%
  • $70,619 to $74,855: 3.0%
  • $74,856 to $79,346: 3.5%
  • $79,347 to $84,107: 4.0%
  • $84,108 to $89,154: 4.5%
  • $89,155 to $94,503: 5.0%
  • $94,504 to $100,174: 5.5%

The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) is a tax benefit for low and middle-income earners. For 2024-2025:

  • Maximum offset of $700 for taxable income up to $37,500
  • Between $37,500 and $45,000: Offset reduces by 5 cents for each dollar over $37,500
  • Between $45,000 and $66,667: Offset reduces by 1.5 cents for each dollar over $45,000
  • No offset for taxable income above $66,667

For example:

  • Taxable income of $35,000: Full $700 offset
  • Taxable income of $40,000: $500 offset ($700 - ($2,500 × 0.05))
  • Taxable income of $50,000: $250 offset ($325 - ($5,000 × 0.015))

Note: LITO is only available to Australian residents and is not available to non-residents or working holiday makers.
